the stuff that counts

I've been trying to work out how to broach this subject....
Before anyone panics on our behalf, our house is still standing, unscathed. The fire is uncontained in our neck of the woods and it's creeping our way. I'm fairly confident that our home will survive. But if it doesn't....
I just spent two years at a remote location with just a handful of items. Two years. All I took with me was my bicycle, my golf clubs (which I never got a chance to use), my computer, my guitar, a handful of books, and some clothes. I was fine. No. Other than the fact that I was without Michelle and I missed our pets, I was happy.
Maybe I'm just an odd American (?), but I think I'm happier when I don't have much. It rather forces a simplification of my life, and I'm free of the weird guilt of owning all kinds of stuff that I either bought on a whim or ceased to use or enjoy. I've thought this for a long time, really. I think I have too much. We have too much.
Given our 'druthers, we'd get rid of the extra stuff the usual way, via Ebay. But we agree that we simply have more stuff than we ever use and thus, far more than we could possibly need.
We want to keep our home. We do love it. But? If we lost everything we don't have with us, we'd be fine (aside from the hassle of collecting insurance and finding a place to live until our new pad is built, etc).
It's just stuff. Stuff isn't us.
What I guess I'm trying to say is this: the stuff that really counts isn't stuff.

Diana,
The best analysis of stuff I’ve ever heard:

Stuff can be a distraction from what’s really important. But it sounds like you knew that already.

I know what you mean, Diana. But most of my “stuff” has been passed down to me, (or written/made by me)—and that means that those in the first half of that will be the FIRST to go out of the house!!! (Of course, your Uncle Charles may have a little bit to say about that, too!)
