today was magical

My new glasses came in the mail from Incirlik.
They look a bit dorky and they don't fit right, but.... Wait. Here's a pic.
But...I CAN SEEE!
I can see clearly now, the blur is gone / I can see all obstacles in my way, and stuff very far away, even, in stark detail. Wow.
I've just discovered a couple of odd things. Seriously. Listen.
1. The world is three-dimensional.
I'm not kidding. It really is. I mean...I knew this, right? But I forgot to what extent. The world now looks to me like I'm in a 3-D movie.
I know, I know. The rest of you are saying, "Um. Yeah? That's the point of 3-D, right?"
Maybe. To me, for many years, 3-D movies have been so realistic that they are surreal. And I just understood why: I haven't seen everything around me in focus for many years. The idea that someone could see everything in focus at once seemed surreal to me. Fuzzy vision compresses the world.
So today, I put on my glasses and walked out into the sunlight, and...wow. I could see the palm trees in the foreground, the architecture in the background, the birds, the cats, the people, I could read the signs. I was blind, but now I see.
And when I walked...the world moved before me like I was in a 3-D movie. You know...the world around you seems to move. The trees you're walking by move past you much faster than the buildings behind them.
For the record, I pretended I was in Avatar.
2. I now understand why my camera pictures of the Izmir night never come out the way I see them.
My view of the night across the bay is magical. It's slightly unfocused, so the distant shore looks like a bed of glittering jewels. With the glasses, it's still nice, but it loses its magic. Kinda like the camera sees it.
Come to think of it, that's a method I can use to determine when I need a new prescription....

You probably won’t scare the shit out of me when you drive anymore either! Amazing! Congratulations honey. ;)
3. I will no longer scare the shit out of my passenger.

Now you are a part of the “club"—-those of us who, years and years ago, ended up with four eyes! Welcome to the real world, and all its depths! Glad you can see, and that you will be a better, safer driver when you get back home!!!!
Diana,
“Dorky"? Be serious. You’ve been hanging out with the jocks too long. They look great. The bad news is they won’t discourage guys from making passes. Sorry.
Enjoy your newfound world. It sounds like Izmir is too beautiful a place to live to not be able to see it. (That’s my impression from the photos, anyway.)

By the way, the glasses don’t hurt your looks at all. You are still BEAUTIFUL!
Actually, I always thot you were rather attractive, and I defy anyone to say I am the least bit prejudiced. They appear to be designed to enhance the natural beauty of a natural beauty. Winner all around.
On a personal note, I can’t find my password to my blog, and I have thought of a thing or two that others may be interested in. Could you contact Jeff for me, and ask him to forward it to me ? It would be appreciated.
By the way, I am trying to keep up with your blog now, though from time to time I have to bite my tongue at your language, etc. I still don’t like that kind of language, even tho most in my family are quite comfortable with it. Love you much, regardless.
I think they look great. I had no idea you were having so much trouble seeing. I wear contacts myself, except in the mornings after getting up and before my shower. Since I use the glasses so seldom (and only in the house), I’ve put off buying new ones for years. But I wore them for air travel recently (it is always so drying on the eyes) and discovered that I could not read signs with unless I was right up on them. So I guess it’s time to spring for a new pair.
That’s the weird thing, Mary. I had no idea I was having so much trouble seeing, either. It creeps up on you, you know? I still need reading glasses, too.
Mich is going to help me choose some stylish frames when she comes to visit IN 30 DAYS but who’s counting. :)
I don’t know that I’ll ever go contacts. We’ll see. Miss you!
