Diana,

Congratulations once again! I suspect a thesis defense is mainly an opportunity for the committee to crucify the unworthy, but you’ve already proved your worth so it was just a formality. Kind of like a job interview for the boss’ child.

Sorry to hear about your tummy troubles. With all the balls you have in the air it wouldn’t surprise me if it was stress related, even though you may not feel like any one thing is all that stressful. And remember, You’re Not Getting Any Younger, You Know™. (Just kidding!) Or maybe it’s just that German beer.

(Speaking of juggling, we’ve managed to safely land a couple items here, as you’ve read elsewhere. But I’ve added a new one: a couple weeks ago I interviewed with a major supplier of military radio equipment. Last week the HR associate there called and said they want to make an offer but they need to get it approved by a corporate Wizard. So I’m waiting for the Great and Powerful Oz to get back from vacation.)

Wasn’t it at a previous PHA where they thought you were suicidal? No wonder people lie at those things. Seems like it could be a good opportunity to mess with the examiners’ heads, but it might end up in your records and come back to bite you later. Maybe it looks different on the inside, from out here the perception is that the military has no sense of humor.

Speaking of service, my daughter’s friend shipped out for AF basic training last week. I thought he said it’s in Mississippi. Does that sound right?

Anyway, congratulations on the thesis, the new job, and the impending move!

Thanks, Dave. Incidentally, I was getting concerned. You haven’t updated your blog for a while (but then, I’ve only spot-checked it lately).

AF Basic is all at Lackland in San Antonio. However, it is followed by tech school and one of the major tech school bases is Keesler in Biloxi. Maybe that’s what she was talking about. ?

“Impending” move. Sounds like a storm on the horizon. ;)

Diana,

Oh, that’s right, San Antonio. I remember feeling sorry for him because he’d be there for basic in the summer.

I guess he’s going to be a network technician of some sort. Would that school likely be at Keesler?

I chose the word “impending” for a reason - like storm clouds on the horizon, you really don’t know what you’re in for until you’re in the middle of it. Then it’s too late but to see it through.

I haven’t updated my blog lately because there isn’t much to report. Roberta continues to improve. I know she’s feeling better because she’s not as snippy as she was there for a while. She has an appointment with the oncologist in about 2 weeks, so until then we don’t really know what’s next. (We hope the delay means she’s not likely to need radiation.)

So for now, at least, no news is good news. But like one of my many bosses used to tell me, “say nothing by saying something.” (He was talking about writing specifications. If you’re going to intentionally -not- include a detail, say so. That way your reader knows it’s by design, not an oversight.) I’ll try to post something a little more regularly, even if it’s just someting like “so far, so good.”

I know what it’s like to keep checking back and not find anything new. (Grin)

Ah. I deserved that. :)

And to think I was going to remind you that, even though you don’t have anything to report on Roberta’s progress at the moment, there’s plenty else to offer your opinion on. I seem to recall someone saying something along those lines to me a while back….

A propos of nothing (except the fact that I’m busy finishing my last 12-hr graveyard at the moment, I put in last night’s duty log: “No excitement in the wee hours other than the thrill of exhaustion that is uncomfortably similar to drunkenness.”

My relief added below it: “(minus the fun that normally accompanies the process of becoming drunk)”

There was a time that what we put in the duty logs was closely scrutinized, but we’ve managed to get the duty logs back down to the report/conversation between crew commanders that they were designed to be (without the brass reading everything we write and clucking disapprovingly), meaning we have more leeway for occasional levity. I live for the little amusements, sometimes.

Diana,

I know what you mean about finding (or making) amusements to break up the monotony. I’ve come across some pretty funny comments in source code that I’ve had to maintain. Especially that written by contractors - they know nobody ever reads that stuff, and if they do it’s after the contractor is long gone.

I’ve added a few personal notes of my own to code over the years. There’s a comment marking Roberta’s birthday in something I worked on back in the 1980s, and more recently I made a product we just developed come up with the time of death of one of my favorite authors on the internal clock.

I wouldn’t consider these humorous exchanges, though. It’s more like marking territory.
