Diana,

I’m glad you came up for air! I wasn’t worried, I know what a time sink moving can be. But it’s good to know things are going fairly well.

The prospectives on your old place may very well know what a great place they’re looking at; they may just be playing it cool to get their best deal. Not everybody shops the way I do. (I decide what somethng is worth to me, and if the asking price is at or below that I go ahead and pay it. I only haggle if something is worth more to me than I can afford.) Some people will squeeze for every penny. I can’t imagine being that much in love with money.

Sorry to hear about your bike. eBay’s a good place to look for parts if you’re into DIY. Otherwise a shop might be able to come up with a replacement or even knock the dent out of it.

Sounds like your prof’s dealt with incoming faculty before. Good for him. As for culling your stash, just bite the bullet and be ruthless. Yes, it might hurt a little bit at first, but just think of all the room you’ll have to collect ALL NEW STUFF!

Seriously, though - congratulations on the new job and the new house. May they provide you much joy.

I shop the way you do, Dave–for everything, really. I’ll either pay asking price if it seems reasonable or offer what I’m willing to pay. If the person thinks it’s worth more than what I offer, then I say “Thanks for your time” and walk on.

Except for buying a vehicle. I’m a demon when it comes to that, I admit. I don’t try to bid them down, because I don’t think that sort of thing flies now. I do play the quota card for all it’s worth, though.

There are, from what I understand, many people interested in the house. I figure that means I might even get asking price. Wish me luck. :)

Diana,

Wish you luck? Of course! From the day I started reading your blog I’ve wished you luck.

I’d have considered bidding on your house myself, but that’s an awfully long commute.

Dave

P.S. Good luck! D.
