Um, OW!!!!! I’ve had those little zit-thingies on my fingers before, but they’ve never morphed into what you’re describing. Yikes. Hope it’s feeling better soon!
The doc said today that it was probably an insect bite, judging from the ongoing discoloration at the wound.
The doc did another anesthetic block to my finger on Wednesday and dug again for the infection (it makes me queasy to think about it). He found the infection at the bone, cleaned out as much as he could (with tweezers then saline injections), and inserted a wick to help keep oxygen to the infection and give the impurities an exit route. When I went in today and took off the Band-aid (under the myriad padding on my finger), the wick came with it, loaded with pus. We soaked it for about 30 minutes in saline and hydrogen peroxide solution, then he cleaned out the pus, then we did it again. I’m on orders to maintain my current antibiotic course and soak/clean it once or twice a day, working the joints (bending the finger) as it soaks. I’ll go back to see him Tuesday morning.
It still hurts but it’s a bearable sort of hurt, finally.
The swelling in the back of my hand and related tenderness up my arm is subsiding, too. I can see my knuckles again. :) YESSS!!!

Diana,
I’m sorry to hear about your run-in with the wee beasties. I managed to pick up a very mild case of cellulitis last year, but it wasn’t anything like what you’ve been going through. Ten days of Keflex cleared it right up.
I’ve read that many wounds diagnosed as bites from the infamous brown recluse spider were actually staph infections. It’s a good thing your doctor knows the difference.
Dave
Hi, Dave. :)
Several random people have volunteered that possibility, but it doesn’t make sense. I’m fairly sure I’d know when a fiddler bit me, first; second, I’m quite sure the bite necrotizes surrounding flesh within 48 hours. (As a possible third, I don’t believe we have the buggers in this neck of the woods, anyway.)
In retrospect, we should have lanced the infection origin last Friday when I first went in, but I can’t blame them for checking first to see if the antibiotic would clear it up. Heaven knows what bit me, though. Apparently, there’s a variety of otherwise innocuous bugs who carry staph. Frightening when you think about it, really.

Diana,
I am sorry for what you have gone through, but I did have to laugh at your latest blog title “from the queen of offbeat ailments", because I thought that was me.
Anyway, glad to hear that you are finally on the mend and are able to see your knuckles again.

Diana,
I found an article by a medical entomologist talking about how common incorrect diagnoses of recluse bites are, especially in areas where they don’t live. He lists a number of alternate causes of similar symptoms, some of which can be a real bear if they’re not diagnosed correctly. (Lyme disease, for example.) Here’s the link if you’re curious:

How are you doing now? Is it still improving?
Dave
Ahhh thanks PD I feel much better now… I’ve been feeling sorry for myself because Ive been running fever and feel like general ummm sh**. I feel much better now :) Helen
Thanks, Dave! Interesting site. I remember reading a dozen or more sites on the recluse when I was in California (can’t remember why, now…that is, can’t remember why I was researching the fiddler, not why I was in California, which I have a clue about). Definitely not a recluse.
The area is still purple, sensitive and itchy (around the incision site), all-in-all about the size of a nickel. It hurts like a bitch when I inadvertently bump it, but other than that, I’m pleased. I finished my antibiotics last night. The swelling has almost disappeared. I’m sure I’ll be ok…and I get to keep my hand! w00t!
In other news, I presented my paper at the (local) conference today. It was well-received and provoked some interesting discussion. In the course of writing this paper, I discovered that I have some talent when it comes to literary criticism and there are bits of it I enjoy, but it ultimately isn’t my metier. Nonetheless, I plan to shoot my paper to my boss to find out what I must do with it–now that I’ve spent so much time with this book and paper–to get it published.
I’m still a bit behind on my grading–and I tried grading during my convalescent time, believe it or not: with my right hand elevated, grading with my left hand, on percocet–but considering all, I feel good and free for the first time in months.

Hi d
Sorry to barge in here like this, but I just wanted to give you a link to a new forum founded by a lot of the ex-II staff, with a lot of members you’ll recognise.
We’d all like to see you there.
Thanks
Pendaric / baldbantam
This is soooo cool! I wish I was there to help the guy cut it out!
Glad to hear you can keep your hand.
Love Rog
Thanks very much for the invitation, Pendaric! I’ll check it out, but I can’t promise anything; I’ve found that my research/writing/prep for GRE subject test are all-consuming when I’m not teaching, prepping and grading. I’ve learned to limit my “board” time in the interest of my career. (This is also one of the reasons my blogging has suffered, too. Plus I’ve taken up sociable hobbies, like cribbage, so I don’t spend ALL my time reading and writing. All work and no play, etc.)
You may still get your chance, Rog….
