More often than not, they just need someone to listen to their ideas and say, “Yes. That’s great!”

Diana,

That’s hitting close to home for us engineering types. We’re used to thinking of a statement as being either right or wrong, accurate or inaccurate. It’s a little bit of a stretch to consider that what we think about something - or more precisely, how we feel about something - as valid information. It doesn’t come naturally.

Then you expect us to express it using the same precision and organization we’re supposed to use for technical writing. Is it any wonder we’re messed up? (Grin)

Dagnabbit. Would you change the square brackets in that previous comment to angle brackets, please?

I may be beginning to understand my hurdles, Dave. USAFA is, primarily, an engineering school.

I think I’ll go tear my hair out by the roots now. ;)

Diana,

Thanks for fixing that first comment. Please don’t tear your hair out - eventually you’ll have none left, then you’ll really be stuck for something to do when you’re frustrated. (Don’t ask how I know.)

I’m trying to think of a way to make poetry explication seem more like a design task. That’s something your engineers could get their heads around. But I’m drawing a blank. I just don’t get poetry.

Hmmm. You may want to begin your disertation with the monologue above, as well as the previous. You’ll get lot’s of laughs, as well as a certain amount of understanding of your ideas. I once had a book that might help, but I’m not sure I still own it, and if so, where it might be stashed. I’ll look around and see if I have anything that might help.
