Diana,
Not you too! I have another e-friend (former co-worker, moved on to better things (like Pittsburgh)) who is an avid books-on-tape “reader.” He ate up the Harry Potter books when they became available in print, then did it again as the audio versions came out. He also thinks Dale did an excellent job.
He told me about how such productions are made - I don’t know if it’s from a documentary, an article, or personal experience from having worked in public radio - and the better ones go to great lengths to provide consistency in such things as character voices, and even word pronunciations. Especially for unusual names like Hermione.
A lot of fiction written for young people is really appealing to us older kids. (Grin) Maybe it’s escapism.
As for being tools of Satan, well… I consider myself a member of the Religious Right, but I also think it’s up to a kid’s parents to teach them to distinguish fantasy from reality. Banning potential distractions won’t protect people - they’ll just go find other distractions.

Hi Diana! My “conversion” to Harry Potter happened almost exactly the same way. My husband and I rented the Sorceror’s Stone book on tape from Cracker Barrel for a road trip and were positively hooked.
You will LOVE the rest of them.
I’m working my way through them, Irene. Not in any particular order. I listen to them as I drive (far more relaxing than news). I listen as I cook and do housework (thanks to which, my house has been cleaner than usual lately). They’re quite absorbing. Sometimes, I get so absorbed that it’s all I can do to cut the engine and go to work, even when I know the CD will be there, right where I left off, when I get off duty in the afternoon.
I think Dale’s performance of literature is a wave of the future. This is the direction audio books are headed. How can anyone hear this and not realize this is where it’s at?
Now…if only I could read like that…:)

Hmmm, reading a book out loud….The wave of the future.
Just caught upon a few months of the blog (been busy myself, you know). It sounds as if things are going your way. Oh, and by the way, Arabic is no more difficult than English. (Although I admit I gave up on truely writing the cyrillic several years ago).
Hi Diana,
I wondered where you did all the writing you’re always talking about.
Do you mention this place on your website? I have been checking it periodically for additions and have been disappointed that there seemed to be no more cool stuff to read.
Of course I am on IIDB, but I am not always interested in the topics you are involved with. Though I do check up to see who you are sticking it to every now and again.
Harry Potter, I love Harry Potter. Harry Potter kicks arse. I have read all the books, (and I almost never read fiction - except Shakespeare and some other classics).
It is worth taking a look at the JK Rowlings official website. There is some cool info there that HP fans might find interesting.
About the funniest thing she has to say is that only one of the characters is based on a real person, and would you believe that it’s Lockhart? Not only that, but she claims that the guy is even worse in real life than the fictional character.
Anyway now I gotta go read the rest of this blog.
