We were in Germany 6 years at 3 different duty stations, all of which sported Burger Kings. We moved back to the States in 1993 and I can only remember going to a Burger King twice since then. Once after leaving a doctor’s appointment on base with only so many minutes to grab a bite and get back to work and once while in Michigan, and then only because it was within walking distance from our hotel and open late.

Hehe, I loved the Japanese version of KFC. For whatever reason, they cut chicken differently. SOme parts are recognizeable, like drumsticks.

However, other parts are not identifiable… Thus the franchise was soon renamed (At least to the Marines) Kentucky Fried Kitten.

We ate there often.

I ordered Whopper con queso y papas fritas y coca-cola media at a Burger King near Valencia, Venezuela. It was very much like any Burger King in Merka, even tasted the same, not my first choice in food, but reliably the same wherever you may wander.

Sometimes when travelling abroad, the site of any “normal” fast food chain is a blessing. It’s good to go in and suddenly feel like you’re down the street from your house.

You might not get the lack of “normal” since I’m sure they try very hard to have the same kinds chow available in the mess hall that they do at every other AFB in the world. Allowing, of course, for seasonal and stock-related menu variations.

In Denmark McD’s showed me that “they all speak English” and they don’t care what currency you carry. In Fiji McD’s crappy milkshake was such a treat after all of that tropical vacation food, and the fries were to die for.

Even when travelling not abroad, but just long distance, the normal places are more welcome than the different places. Although, whenever I’m in the SW US I always seek out In-and-Out burgers. Yum.

Even locally, though, going to BK isn’t what it used to be. Buns are all squished, sauces make the whole thing soggy, and I’m sure they’re getting the last pick of the vegies.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of BK, but after 4+ months here I thought a Whopper with cheese was about the greatest thing I had ever ingested. To each her own, though….
