The “hypovigilance” gene runs in our family, for some. It definitely correlates with the “lost in thoughts” gene.

I think the word “gestalt” relates to that place map in memory. It’s developed in early childhood, and apparently in some people it develops better than others.

I’ve often wondersed about this very subject. Some people can wander through life and never see it unless it hits them in the face (I include myself in this group, and it seems to run in our family) while some are like your roommate - every detail is noticed and they know AND REMEMBER EVERYONE! My wife’s brother is like that - he is always asking her “do you remember ###### from kindergarten? well I met her/him yesterday!” How do you come back from that? Where does this ability come from? I think we all have a spot in our head that we fill with certain things we deem important - whether it is the microscopic details of our surroundings, The names of every book we have read, or the names of every Star Trek episode in the original air date sequence. I’m sure if you think about it there is something up there in your head equally as impressive to others as remembering small details of our surroundings is to those of us with permanent blinders on.

Diana,

I don’t think it’s fair to call this a “problem,” it’s just “different.” Some people have it, some don’t. (I don’t.) Usually where a person lacks in one talent, they excel in another. It’s not like there’s a hole where something was left out.

I think Harry hs the right idea. We naturally focus on what we consider important. (Of course, we might consider it important because it’s what we focus on.) I don’t tend to notice things around me unless they interfere with what I’m doing or they represent an opportunity. (I’m always looking at new construction in the area, trying to figure out if it’s a new restaurant. (Grin))

Some of the less observant people I’ve known were very creative. Maybe they were too busy maintaining their own world to pay much attention to this one.

“Introspection"? “Reflection"? “Preoccupied"? whatever you call it, the words “pay attention you idiot” has rang out in my prescence more than once. I always thought this was a predominatly married guy thing. you know, not noticing the new haircut or the new shoes or the outfit. “Deepthinker"? yea, I like that one. LOL!
