Dear students,
I extend my apologies.
As most of you have been informed by now, Monday's Veteran's Day holiday was cancelled this Wednesday by directive from corporate, leaving no opportunity to inform you of this change when we met this past week, and in fact contradicting the assurances I had previously given you via our syllabus at the beginning of the term and via announcement in lecture this week. We are aware that this does not qualify as timely notice. We are aware that many of you have already contracted obligations to travel or pick up an extra shift at work. I have been verbally assured that such absences can be accommodated if they would otherwise cause an attendance issue at the registrar's office this term.
I am currently developing my lesson plans for Monday. Please watch for an additional email from me Sunday night to allow you to prepare for Monday's lecture. Do not make plans to attend Monday's lecture without reading this email.

Dear students,
Tomorrow's class will begin at 11 a.m. and will consist of a one-hour review and exposition on the homework assignments due next week. No new material will be covered. Students who cannot attend due to commitments made based on my previous assurances — in lecture last week, via announcement on eCompanion, and per our syllabus — that there would be no class on Veteran's Day are asked to inform me via email no later than Tuesday morning. Acceptable excuses include travel to see relatives, picking up an extra shift at work, medical appointments, cruise ship tickets, visits to Disneyland, and general ennui.

Common sense must be more common than I thought. (grin)
(Where does Dr. N teach that “corporate” has a say in what holidays are observed? That sounds like a stunt my employer would pull.)
I had a boss back in the Dark Ages who could be a dink at times, but his heart was in the right place. When the company decreed that all employees must work 6 hours every Saturday in November and December of that year, he scheduled them as Staff Development and Training days in our group. So we played Trivial Pursuit on those days.
